What we will do

Let us start our excursion with the magnificent Tokugawa art museum, which displays the family treasures of the Owari branch of the Tokugawa shoguns.

Set up in a building erected in 1935 on the site of a former Tokugawa feudal residence, the museum exhibits over 10,000 artefacts displayed in rotation including samurai armours and swords, lacquers, utensils for the tear ceremony, precious screens, Noh theatre masks and costumes and amazing miniature rolls dating back to the 12th century.

Next to the museum, we will visit the enchanting Tokugawa garden, in perfect Japanese style. It was destroyed during the Second World War but was reinstated and opened to the public in 2004. Water is its dominant feature: a thick network of paths and lovely bridges winds along and crosses a river, the lake and a waterfall.

We then head to the district of Osu, one of the city’s most popular shopping destinations characterised by long galleries (the typical shotengai) home to over 1,200 shops.

We have some time to wander around the countless shops selling electrical goods, mangas, videogames and second-hand clothing. Restaurants, cafés and small grocery shops provide the perfect occasion to enjoy a short break with typical Japanese specialities.

During our stroll, we have the opportunity to admire the large Osu Kannon temple, which combines Buddhist and Shinto elements. It was originally built in 1333 and moved into its current position in 1612, even though what we see today is an accurate 1970 reconstruction after a fire destroyed the original.
