Excursion 'AROMAS OF GRENADA AND SWIMMING IN THE WATERFALLS'

Description

It is the western side of the island that features the most typical aspects: spices and cocoa on the Dougaldston Estate, nutmeg in Gouyave, waterfalls on the tropical hills and plantations on the highlands. A fascinating journey through the aromas and colours of Grenada.

What we will see
  • The cocoa plantation at the Dougaldston Estate The nutmeg factory at Gouyave Concord Falls* West Coast

What we will do
  • We leave St. George and head north along the Caribbean Sea coastline passing a succession of fishing villages and beaches that unravel in front of us like long coral and volcanic ribbon reefs: here in the Caribbean, life is relaxed and slow paced.
  • Fishing is not the only activity in Gouyave. Behind its high walls this town is home to an incredible organisation: the nutmeg cooperative. It is just like taking a step back in time, going back at least a century. There are no conveyor belts or specialised machinery: the processing of the precious spice is all done by the skilful fingers of the local mamas. Day after day their humble and skilful routines keep the secrets of the long tradition of nutmeg alive, making this timeless place the second largest exporter in the world.
  • Dougaldston Estate, just outside Gouyave, is another place that is permeated by a rural atmosphere: this old cocoa plantation, founded in 1700, unveils a flamboyant palette of aromas and colours.
  • Later, on our way back, we take a small detour to see the Concord Falls and explore the plantations on the side of the mountain.
