What we will do
  • We board our motorised tour boat and cut our way towards the city centre along the Giudecca Canal, which marks the southern edge of the lagoon city.
  • Our journey leads us past the island of San Giorgio, before taking us towards the northern reaches of the splendid lagoon where we can admire the islands of San Clemente, San Servolo and, finally, San Lazzaro, whose monastery is a pearl of Armenian architecture.
  • Our boat then ferries us to the Venetian Lido, a long strip of earth that protects the city from the wintry gusts that come in off the Adriatic. The one-time refuge of Thomas Mann and generations of Venetian sailors, the Lido is famous today as the site of the Venice Film Festival.
  • Entering the Orfanello Canal, we are treated to a splendid view of the Fortress of Sant’Andrea, which was built on the ruins of the previous defensive works in the 16th century, before we pass the islands of Le Vignole and Sant’Erasmo.
  • Our route then takes us across the Marani Canal, at which point we catch our first glimpse of the walls and tower of the Venice Arsenal, the city’s historic shipyards and the first industrial complex to appear in Europe during the medieval period.
  • We are then treated to a view of the city’s first cathedral, the Basilica of San Pietro di Castello, which, with its red roof tiles and large central dome, seems to float directly on the water.
  • The last stop on our journey is the island of Murano, which is famous the world over for its glasswork.
  • Finally, we head back towards the port, passing the famous Piazza San Marco and the pointed tower that forms such an unmistakeable feature of the Venetian skyline.
