What we will do
  • We leave the port by coach and head in the direction of Saint-Leu, where the geological formations of the coast have created a unique natural spectacle, the so-called Souffleur, a violent jet of sea-water that climbs several metres into the air.
  • Our journey continues on to the Gouffre, close to the town of Étang-Salé. This is another geological formation in the coastline, a natural corridor that cuts into the volcanic rocks and offers wonderful views of the ocean.
  • Our next destination is the beach at Manapany, where the reefs form a natural pool of calm water within the bay that is perfect for swimming.
  • The morning ends with a stop at Cap Méchant, a rocky promontory where the waves disintegrate into white foam as they crash against the walls of a natural arch in the cliffs.
  • A special treat awaits us at the Le Palmier guest house where Madame Fiarda has prepared a delicious lunch of traditional creole dishes, including the island’s famous palm hearts.
  • After lunch we travel to the area known as the Grand Brûlé where, with the passing of the years and successive eruptions, the lava flows have formed a landscape of black rock that runs down into the deep, blue waters of the ocean.
  • Next, we head to the Anse des Cascades, an inlet where several waterfalls and a delightful sea of palm trees combine to create a unique, natural spectacle.
  • Our tour continues, bringing us to the church of Notre-Dame-des Laves. Although the church was ultimately spared, we can still see the lava flows that lapped one corner of the building following an eruption in 1977.
  • Back on the road, we make another stop at the spectacular Rivière de l'Est Suspension Bridge, to take a photo or two, before heading to the church of Sainte-Anne the island’s only Baroque church. The exterior has been entirely restored.
  • At the end of our trip, we have some free time to indulge in a spot of shopping before returning to the ship.
