We walk around the city of Key West with our guide for a journey back in time to the 1930s, when Ernest Hemingway chose it as his residence: we visit the author's house-museum and even his favourite haunt, the famous Sloppy Joe’s Bar.

What we will see
  • Stroll around Key West
  • Little White House
  • Bahama Village and Key West lighthouse
  • Ernest Hemingway house-museum
  • Sloppy Joe's Bar

What we will do
  • We meet our guide as soon as we get off our ship and go on a pleasant stroll to discover Key West, the southernmost city of the continental United States.
  • We admire the Little White House, the winter residence of President Truman who devised important project such as the Marshall Plan here.
  • We cross the Bahama Village, historic quarter founded in the early 19th century by migrants from the Bahamas and where the African cultural heritage is still very much alive today and reach the Key West lighthouse, one of the 15 oldest in the US proudly towering over a magnificent garden in the heart of the city.
  • Once at the Ernest Hemingway house-museum, we follow our guide on a visit of the lovely colonial building with a white façade and yellow shutters surrounded by a porch and tropical garden. The author lived here between 1928 and 1940 with his second wife Pauline and the museum displays many interesting objects from his long career as a writer.
  • We visit the rooms where much of the furniture has remained practically unchanged and admire the collection of amazing lighting fixtures (a passion of Hemingway’s wife), including one made of Murano glass, and let ourselves be charmed by the original atmosphere of the place, which is still home to some peculiar inhabitants: the famous six-toed cats descendants of the original one owned by the author.
  • We then head to Sloppy Joe’s Bar, Hemingway’s favourite haunt and now a true institution. We visit the historic bar and learn more about the author’s pleasure-loving past.
  • After our excursion, we can decide whether to head back to the port with our guide or enjoy some free time in the city.
