What we will do
  • A coach takes us from the port to the Otrabanda quarter in Willemstad. Otrabanda means “other bank” and is in fact used to identify the quarter on the other bank of the famous swinging bridge in Willemstad. From here, we move on to the Curaçao Museum, the second stop on our excursion.
  • The museum was opened in 1948 and combines contemporary art with a collection of paintings made by local and international artists as well as a reconstruction of life on the island during the mid 19th century. The museum also displays a model of the first aeroplane that crossed the ocean from Europe to Curaçao.
  • We then head back towards the centre where cross Queen Juliana bridge overlooking both banks of the natural port of St. Ana Bay and offering spectacular views of the capital. It is a four lane road bridge across St. Anna Bay named after Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. It weighs 3,400 tons and reaches a height of approximately 56 metres at its apex.
  • After passing by US Consulate Franklin D. Roosevelt House, we head to the Chobolobo Dutch colonial residence, where the original Curaçao liqueur is distilled in one-hundred-year-old barrels.
  • Here, we can sample the famous liqueur or purchase a few typical souvenirs.
  • The next stop takes us to the quarter of Jan Thiel, which offers picturesque views over the bay of Caracas and the lagoon of Spanish Water, named after the fact that the Spanish landed here when they first arrived in Curaçao.
  • We have time to make a stop to for some shopping at the local craft market.
  • As we head back towards the centre, we admire the lovely colourful houses of Sharloo, the Jewish quarter where the ancient merchant properties are still in excellent condition and show off their beauty, so much so that this part of the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
